Youde Zephyrus Review

DSC_0046

So.. the Youde Zephyrus…. This tank has been in the spot light quite a lot recently and seems to have been quite a hit in vape world, mainly for one reason – the RBA deck.

Some other sub ohm tanks do offer RBA decks and some like the Kanger subtank and subtank mini do include them, however they have been a little disappointing, mainly do to juice flow. The RBA deck that comes with the Zephyrus seems to be of a better standard, but I will talk you through this later in the review.

The Youde Zephyrus comes in a clear plastic box and does come with a nice collection of goodies, in the box you will find the following;

  • 1 x Youde Zephyrus sub ohm tank with pre-installed 0.3 ohm dual coil
  • 1 x Spare glass tank
  • 1 x RBA deck
  • 1 x Set red O-rings
  • 1 x Set clear O-rings
  • 1 x Spare grub screw
  • 1 x spare airflow O-ring
  • 1 x spare drip tip O-ring
  • 1 x spare RBA deck O-ring
  • 1 x spare filling plug

I purchased this tank from E-bay, but the E-bay store has now closed as they have opened a website, I paid 23.99 with free shipping. I have found it on http://www.greyhaze.co.uk for £24.99, but it does appear to be a slightly elusive tank in the UK.

The tank itself is made up of the following components:

  • Base, with removable airflow control ring
  • Coil / RBA deck
  • Glass tank with a 5ml capacity
  • 2 part top-cap with rubber plug for top filling
  • Drip tip

As with most tanks in this style the top cap is joined to the base with the coil / RBA deck, so to assemble the tank you first slide the glass tank into the rubber O-ring in the top cap and then with the coil screwed into the base, you screw the chimney section of the top cap into the coil. I have had issues unscrewing this tank, mainly due to the fact that the airflow control ring comes off the bottom of the base and the edges that it exposes are very sharp, making it difficult to grip and apply the pressure required to unscrew the base without cutting yourself.

This tank has a top fill design, which is an excellent feature, to operate this, with the tank assembled you simply unscrew the top of the tank which exposes a red plug, you remove the plug and have, almost, a figure 8 shaped hole into the tank. This is designed so that there is room for air to escape the tank as you are filling, once you have filled the tank you replace the plug and the metal cap and you are good to go. I think if you have large fingers and very short nails you may find it a little tricky to remove the plug, but you could just use tweezers, all in all a good feature as it enables you to fill the tank to the very top.

The airflow on the tank is very good, it has 8mm x 2mm slots on each side and it is fully adjustable and the tension on the control ring is perfect. The airflow control ring does slide off the bottom of the base, this is good for cleaning purposes, but as I mentioned earlier it does expose a rather sharp edge.

The drip tip on this tank is slightly unusual, it is a 2 part drip tip, a larger base with heat fins, then a smaller top piece which has a swirling effect inside, although I am not sure this makes any difference. The bottom section with heat fins is a good idea and I tend to leave this on then add my own 510 drip tip.

The stock coil that came with this tank is a different design to what you normally see with sub ohm tanks and is a dual horizontal kanthal coil wicked with organic cotton. It has 2 juice holes on each side, each hole measures 3mm in diameter. It is a wider coil than others which makes priming the coil easier, it is a 0.3 ohm coil rated at 20 – 50W.

So… how does it vape? When I first got the tank I installed the stock coil and filled it up with an 80% VG juice, as with all new coils it tasted a bit funky to begin with but after about 1/2 a tank it was producing a very satisfying vape, both vapour production and flavour. I do have to say that after a couple of tanks of juice I was getting a lot of black.. liquid / condensation when cleaning the drip tip and chimney, then by the end of the second day I decided to stop using the coil as I felt a little unsure on this black substance. I know this is a little vague however I have no idea what was causing it, possibly the coil (doubtful) possibly the liquid (I have not had this issue in other tanks with the same liquid) so I am guessing it is a combination of both and the temperature I was vaping it at, or I just had a duff coil as I have not seen anyone else say they had this issue. Aside from the gunk issue it vaped very well and I will be getting some more coils for this.

Now the RBA deck… It is a 4 post design with 2 negative posts and a single positive connection with 2 holes in the top, nothing revolutionary but a good design as each wire has its own hole, the interesting part is the airflow, you have 2 large holes on either side under where you place your coil’s, for me this is great, I love bottom airflow as I think it really improves the flavour, but for some people this will not be such a great design. The juice flow slots on here are a good size too, so it appears to be a good deck and is essentially why I bought this tank. Unfortunately it appears that I am in the ‘can’t wick this RBA deck club’ as I have tried and failed 4 times to wick this deck but every-time I just get dry hit after dry hit. I have watched review after review of people building and wicking it, but just cannot get it right. I have given up for now, mainly due to the arrival of the Aspire Triton tank and Sigelei Elite 2 tank, so perhaps I will go back and give it another go soon, however at this moment all I can say is it looks good and that some people have made it work great…..

Pros and cons to summarize;

Pros

  • Top filling system
  • 2 piece drip tip
  • 5ml juice capacity
  • Supplied with RBA coil
  • Spare glass tank
  • Full set of spare O-rings
  • Ample airflow

Cons

  • Difficult to remove base
  • Sharp edge under airflow control ring
  • Cannot wick RBA coil

All in all, an average tank really, it works well with the stock coils and it is nice to have the top filling system, but it is a highly competitive and fast moving market so I fear it may be out done quite soon.

Thank you for reading, please feel free to leave some feedback.
